Celebrate Black History at the Savannah Black Heritage Festival
For over 33 years, the Savannah Black Heritage Festival (SBHF) has proudly showcased the vibrancy and history of the Black community in Georgia. This multi-disciplinary festival features performances, exhibits, and activities that showcase the cultural and historical contributions of the Black community. This fantastic event was started in 1988 by Westley W. Law and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History with support and funding from the city. Pick Up Something to Read at the Savannah Book Festival!
One thing that all lifelong learners have in common is a love of reading, which is why you can’t miss the Savannah Book Festival. This exciting event features an impressive line up, including keynote speakers and famous authors. Housed in historic buildings downtown, the Book Festival is a fantastic way to explore the city’s historic district and connect with other book lovers. This fantastic attraction is held outdoors at the Central Of Georgia Railway Carpentry Shop’s lower and upper courtyard. With over a dozen exhibits, including a maze, there is plenty for your children to explore and learn during their visit!
Open Your Eyes to the History of the Pin Point Heritage Museum
Make sure you drive out to the Pin Point Heritage Museum. This museum celebrates the freedman community founded in 1896 after the civil war and celebrates Gullah/Geechee culture. This amazing attraction is full of history. It’s even housed in the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory!
Visit Three Museums in One Place at the Telfair Museums
The Telfair Museums is a collection of three incredible attractions: the Jepson Center, the Telfair Academy and Owen-Thomas House & Slave Quarters. The Jepson Center houses stunning artwork and exhibits. The Telfair Academy is housed in a two-story mansion designed by William Jay and built-in 1819. It features nineteenth-century period rooms and a collection of American and European Art. Finally, one of the most poignant historical attractions is the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters. Visitors can enjoy guided tours exploring the history and complicated relationships of slavery in Savannah.
