Along the Georgia coast, you can find some mighty good food, known locally as low country cuisine. Many of the most famous low country dishes are a mix of seafood, African cuisine, New Orleans and Cajun cuisine. The vibrant mix of local seafood like shrimp, fish, crab and oysters and unique cultural flavors is all a part of the charm and history of the Savannah and Coastal Georgia area. So what are some of the top dishes you should try? Here are our picks (and a few of the local restaurants you can try them at too!)
Fried Chicken
Fried chicken is a southern staple, and in Savannah, there are plenty of places you can find some deliciously crunchy and mouth-watering chicken! You could even tour the city to try every different fried chicken recipe available! But our favorite has to be the fried chicken at Mrs. Wilke’s Dining Room. Located in the heart of the historic district, you can get a classic fried chicken meal with all the best side dishes, from collard green to candied yams!
Shrimp and Grits
Shrimp and grits is a popular low country recipe and a favorite along the coast where access to fresh shrimp is plentiful. However, actor Leslie Jordan claims that the best shrimp and grits are found here in Savannah at the historic The Olde Pink House. This high-end restaurant is one of the city’s most popular places to eat. The restaurant is even located inside an 18th-century mansion!
Turtle Soup
This suggestion is a bit of a trick because turtle soup is no longer made since sea turtles were declared endangered. But it was once as common as fried chicken in Savannah and along the coast. Members of the black community popularized the recipe and many others when they began to open their own eating establishments. Savannah and the coastal areas of Georgia have a rich history of Black-owned restaurants and eateries featuring traditional dishes like baked oysters, fried chicken, collard greens, ox-tails, and more. Support black-owned businesses like Geneva’s Famous Chicken and Cornbread, The Grey Restuarant, The Sisters of the New South and many more during your stay. Of course, you wouldn’t find turtle soup on the menu, but you will find plenty of delicious food that has long been part of the culinary scene in Georgia!
Georgia Peaches
You can’t visit Georgia without having a Georgia peach. While they taste incredible when freshly picked, the tastiest way to eat them is to have them for dessert. Throughout the city and along the coast, peaches are an integral part of any restaurant’s dessert menu. They are served as pie, in cheesecakes, with ice cream, or baked into a cobbler. But peaches aren’t the only sweet treats in town, either. Check out this list of some of the best dessert spots in the city. You’re bound to find something for your sweet tooth!
Chatham Artillery Punch
If you’re looking for a nightcap after a delicious meal or a great party punch recipe in Savannah, you’ve got to try a Chatham Artillery Punch. This historic drink contains rum, whisky, brandy, champagne, lemons and sugar. It’s named for Chatham county and a 19th-century Savannah artillery unit called the Republican Blues. Some rumors suggest the drink was created when the young regiment members gathered to celebrate, and one member, Sergeant A.B. Luce, concocted the punch in a horse bucket. It’s known for its robust flavour and potency, so make sure you drink it on a full stomach. In 1885, the local paper, the Augusta Chronicle, said this of the drink “as a vanquisher of men it’s equal has never been found.”
